Chaque semaine, dans le monde, près d’un milliard d’animaux sont abattus pour leur viande. Ce nombre colossal inclut environ 900 millions de poulets, 17 millions de moutons et de chèvres, 24 millions de porcs et six millions de bovins.

L'organisation de défense des droits des animaux GAIA se réjouit de la décision de la province du Brabant flamand qui a refusé la demande de Philip Morris d'augmenter à Heverlee le nombre d'expériences animales (de 1600 à 6850 souris et rats).
